Lumber recovery factor is defined and its economic importance is examined by: comparing operating costs in hypothetical mills with LRF’s varying from 5.45 fbm/cu. ft. to 7.1 fbm/cu. ft. Guidelines for attaining higher recoveries are suggested for existing and new sawmills. LRF can be improved in existing sawmills through training, improving or replacing equipment to reduce sawing kerfs and tolerances, changing sawing patterns, and improving cutting accuracies. The choice of equipment and layout of a new sawmill should be predicated on the use of reliable and accurate thin kerf sawing equipment and proven automated saw and log positioning equipment.
