One-inch-thick black walnut heartwood at 73 percent moisture content and 70? F was frozen to -5? F in 5 hours with ambient temperatures of -14? F. Two-inch-thick parts took 18-1/2 hours, and 25/8-inch stock 22 hours, to reach -5? F under similar conditions. Material at 38 percent moisture content, similar to gunstock blanks, can be prefrozen in 12 hours. For each 10 percent drop in moisture content from 72 to 28 percent, the freezing period was shortened 2 hours, with little difference due to thickness.
