This paper reviews a field test on double-diffusion preservative treatment of fenceposts. Over 1,000 treated and untreated posts were included in the study. The posts were treated by immersion in two separate aqueous chemical solutions: zinc sulfate with concentrated arsenic acid in a 6.1 ratio, and sodium chromate. After 11 years of service only one loblolly pine treated post had failed. Loblolly pine performed better than the hardwoods. Copper sulfate appears to be a more effective chemical than zinc sulfate in protecting hardwoods. After 11 years service, observations indicate practical soaking treatments for fence posts by double-diffusion process.
