An overly conservative shear stress value has continued from the evaluation of larger-sized members in shear analysis. This paper deals with a pilot study of determining shear stress on 2 by 4 construction lumber. This investigation indicates shear stresses could be increased. Most test specimens failed under bending or under other conditions other than shear. Shear was computed and showed evidence of a margin of safety which could be reduced.
