Simplified Specification of Lumber

The differences between nominal and actual lumber sizes has brought unanimous expressions of opinion from consumers, architects, builders, retail and wholesale dealers, and producers that a new system of lumber measurement is desirable. A new size reference is suggested in which the “by” or “x” of the present nominal sizes is replaced by zero. A 2×4 would then be item 204 and a 2×10 becomes 2010. These references eliminate the problem of nominal and actual sizes and are close enough to the old system to be recognizable. A new system would otherwise be confusing to many. Fractional sizes have been considered and found adaptable to the new proposal. A linear system of lumber measurement is proposed to replace the use of board feet based on nominal dimensions. The linear method is particularly good for items like shelving, studs, joists and rafters, and provides an easy calculation for covering materials like siding. Processors would probably retain board foot measurement for logs but in the sales field linear measures would be simpler. Conversion figures have been developed and in the case of 2×4, or new reference 204, 1000 board feet would be 3,000 lineal feet; for 2×8, or new 208, 1,000 board feet would be 750 lineal feet. A representative group from all branches of the industry is suggested to obtain positive action on some new system for lumber specification.
