The materials and procedure for producing and calibrating a resistance type strain gage for wood is described. One mil constantan wire is soldered to 12 mil constantan wire to produce the strain gage. Five inches of the 1 mil wire, bent to a “U” shape is the recommended configuration for the gage. It is attached to wood with a nitrocellulose adhesive. Gages are calibrated by placing them on a previously calibrated metal beam, loading the beam at quarter points, and recording resistance changes. Several suggestions are included as to the factors to be considered in using such gages.
