Benguet pine, the only commercially important conifer in the Philippines, was investigated as a raw material for hardboard. Since the material source would be sawmill waste and forestry thinnings, the effects of 0, 15, 25, 35, and 50 per cent bark were studied. Wood and bark chips were pulped in an Asplund defibrator and the pulp refined in a Bauer disc refiner. Four conditions were studied at each level of bark addition; unsized, sized with 1/2-percent paraffin, and with or without a post-pressing heat-treatment of 4 hours at 165?F in a forced-draft oven. The effects of bark content, sizing, and heat treatment were significant. Sizing and bark content reduced the strength (MOR) but improved the thickness swelling and water absorption properties. Heat treatment improved all three properties.
