The information explosion with regard to the physical and mechanical properties of wood are reviewed and the author warns that hasty applications of some of this new information may tend to penalize wood in end use where historical performance has been satisfactory. A few examples include differences in modulus of elasticity between Rocky Mountain region Douglas-fir and Pacific Coast Douglas-fir, lack of increase in MOE for increases in dryness, effect of knots on tensile strength, machine stress rating methods to better segregate lumber into stiffness classes, depth effect in large, deep wood beams, etc.
