The technique described makes it possible to photograph small-scale phenomena such as chip formation in cutting, at the same time that recording instruments are being photographed, using the same camera for both operations. This technique made it possible to determine the position of the recorder pens at certain critical phases identified optically. The face of the recorder used was well exposed to view, and vertical, but it was necessary to focus a reduced image at the surface of the specimen, and to reflect it into the camera lens using a small front-surface mirror introduced at one side. A line drawing showing the apparatus set-up and a print from a 35 mm film showing combined view of chip formation and recorder chart are given.
