Glues and gluing techniques are available to satisfactorily bond southern pine lumber and veneer to meet commercial requirements. There is no evidence to indicate that differences exist in the gluability of separate southern pine species. Probably greater differences exist between samples of one species that differ in specific gravity, amount of latewood present on the gluing surface, and amounts of extractives. Southern pine usually is considered moderately easy to glue under a range of gluing conditions with typical woodworking glues. Because southern pine is primarily a structural material, rather than an aesthetic one, the principal gluing applications are in glued laminated timbers and plywood production, both large volume industries that are continually growing.
