Preliminary investigation based on limited observation suggests that hickory flakeboards with generally favorable strength and dimensional properties may be produced in a density range of 44-48 lbs./cu.ft. The surface characteristics of the panels were rough as compared with various commercial particleboards. This drawback could be overcome by using fines on the surface. Also, use of a mat with higher surface moisture content may improve surface smoothness by promoting a greater degree of “flow” in the wood particles under heat and pressure.
