A linear comparator is described for dimensional measurement consisting of a fixed reference point, a movable reference point, and a dial gage mounted on a rigid steel bar. The linear comparator can be made by almost any machine shop for a cost of under $100. A well-made comparator will give readings between fixed points to within 0.002 inch. The accuracy is slightly improved if the reference points are drilled into the wood with a sharp 1/16-inch twist drill.
