Laboratory wet process hardboards were made from aspen sapwood and discolored heartwood refiner groundwood pulps at three freeness levels. Discolored heartwood in the solid wood form showed a higher moisture content, the same specific gravity, lower toughness strength, and a lower pH when compared to sapwood. The pulps from the discolored heartwood appeared to contain more fines and to have a lower swollen volume than did the sapwood pulps. The sapwood boards had a higher modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond strength but a lower dimensional stability in thickness when compared to the discolored heartwood boards.
