Rotary Cutting Veneer with a Floating Bar

Studies involving the cutting of veneer using a “floating” nosebar, in which pressure is applied hydraulically, indicate that a commercial lathe operation with a floating nosebar will provide much greater control over the cutting operation than is presently possible with standard “fixed” nosebar mechanisms. On a 4-foot laboratory lathe, it was found that very good veneer could be obtained with relatively low pressures — of the order of 30 pounds per linear inch of log using a flat nosebar, and 60 pounds per linear inch using a motor-driven roller bar. It is expected that a commercial lathe operating with a floating bar will provide much greater control over the cutting operation by elimination of the problems arising from wear and play in the setting mechanism of worn lathes, and by providing the lathe operator with a precise, measurable, and instantly adjustable means of controlling the bar pressure during the cutting operation.
