Mechanical Properties of Engelmann Spruce Grown in Colorado and Wyoming

Data are presented on the strength and related properties of Engelmann spruce grown in Colorado and Wyoming. The small clear specimens were obtained through the utilization of a technique sampling specimens proportional to volume of the standing sawtimber in these two states. Several new properties, such as modulus of rupture adjusted to 12-inch depth, true elastic modulus, and maximum shear stress in bending, are given for the species. Various basic stress values are derived using the computed 5 percent exclusion limits. Allowable unit stresses are derived from small clear specimens and compared with those obtained by testing full-size dimension lumber.
