A notched solid wood specimen for determining compression shear parallel to grain which is simple to fabricate and test without expensive shear tools and testing machinery was designed and used using three different shear plane lengths of plantation grown red pine. Mean shear strength increased with longer shear plane lengths and was 92 percent of the ASTM block shear value for the 1-1/2-inch specimen. In general, the notched compression shear specimen with 1-1/2-inch shear plane length provided an acceptable estimate of plantation grown red pine shear strength. The specimen can be used in industrial products quality testing, which depends on allowable risks for making acceptance or rejection decisions, or in school shops where a shear tool and testing machines are not available.
