The Fatigue Strength of Two-Pin Moment Resisting Dowel Joints

The fatigue resistance of 33 T-type two-pin moment- resisting dowel joints was investigated. All specimens were constructed of sugar maple (0.75 inches thick) conditioned to 7 percent M.C. Two 2 by 3/8 inch dowels spaced 1-1/2 inches apart were used to connect the 2-1/2 inch wide rail or leg of the T-type specimen, to the 3 inch wide post or bar of the T. A gap-filling urea-formaldehyde adhesive was used to assemble the joints. Both reversed and non-reversed loads applied at 40 cycles per minute were used. Joint life was essentially infinite only at a load level of I/6th or less of the ultimate static bending strength of the joint.
