Many difficulties in lumber drying can be attributed to poor human relations between management and personnel. Often a technically knowledgeable kiln operator or yard foreman will not adopt good drying procedures because he is not motivated by top management. Providing respect, recognition, and appreciation are as important as pointing out mistakes to personnel. Actions, not alibis, count. Before your kiln operator can act for the company’s benefit, he must be capable of acting, he must know what action is required, he must feel secure enough to act, and he must want to act; to make this happen, management must pick people with the right skills, define their jobs, delegate responsibility, and be able to transform the assortment of individuals in a yard, kiln, or rough mill into a motivated team.
