An automatic dry kiln control for use on either new or existing kilns was designed that: 1) Continually measured the wood moisture content in the kiln by weight, 2) determined automatically the desired dry- and wet-bulb settings for the measured moisture content, and 3) proportionally opened or closed valves or vents to obtain the desired temperatures. Previously, programing was usually done manually at daily intervals and valve control was either “off” or “on.” Faster drying (as much as 10 percent faster) was achieved by automatic programing and better temperature control, which implies less lumber degrade, from the more sophisticated control system.
