Gamma Irradiation Effects on Modulus of Elasticity of Engelmann Spruce

Sixty-three beams 1/4 inch square in cross section and 12 inches long were used. Modulus of elasticity was measured dynamically by determining the frequency of vibration. Each beam was measured before and after a radiation treatment. Irradiations were made at order of magnitude intervals from 100 rads to 10 megarads. The mean difference for each treatment group indicated a significant increase in MOE following irradiation doses of 103, 104, and 105 rads. Only the 10 megarad group had a lower mean following irradiation although the difference was not statistically significant. The 10 rad group had the highest statistical significance wi h the average MOE increasing from 1.009 x 10 to 1.060 x 10 psi.
