Effluents from all Koppers Co plants studied, including a wood treating plant, had similar characteristics: 1) high in oxygen demand values, 2) high in phenols, and 3) produced highly colored effluents when treated in activated sludge units. Effluents produced by wood treating plants can be treated with a high degree of success providing that definite requirements are met with regard to the rate of application, quality of the water being irrigated, and soil type.
