Harvest and transport of logging residue by conventional methods is impractical. Chipping in the forest and, processing of chipped material could be feasible if methods were available for removing bark after chipping. Air flotation, compression, and liquid-medium removal of bark from wood chips are now under study. Although research on bark-chip segregation is still, in an early stage, preliminary results indicate that the compression method is promising. Air, flotation is effective in removing some types of bark, that compression debarking cannot remove. Among liquid-medium methods, separation of the bark and wood chips of aspen and other species with immiscible liquids is also effective. Combinations of several methods might be necessary to remove an acceptable amount of bark from wood chips.
