Timber framing systems are widely used in the construction of indoor skating rinks. These vary in design, but this study of two rink buildings of different types indicates that the conditions of low temperature and high humidity associated with their function make condensation on interior surfaces a special problem. When condensation occurs on the wood framing or ceiling, moisture contents in the wood reach high levels, reducing structural strength and causing a decay hazard. Condensation occurs readily on the soffits of exposed timber beams or arches directly above the ice surface, where radiation loss of heat to the ice is greatest. This results in high moisture contents in the bottom layers of members, often the critical area in tension. Condensation may be controlled by ventilation, insulation, dehumidification and heating. Often the ice surface, itself, or wall areas may be designed to condense moisture from the air, reducing humidity, but in areas of high outside air humidity, special dehumidification may be required to keep moisture contents in the wood at tolerable levels.
