Drying problems in the Pacific Northwest are the 19 percent maximum moisture content specifications for kiln-dried lumber for such species as hemlock and the true firs, degrade losses from planer splits, and occurrence of mottled stain in red alder. Kiln-drying to a maximum 19 percent moisture content would incur segregation on the green chain, scanning boards full length for moisture content and redrying the wet stock, or prolonged drying time. Planer split may be reduced by preblanking of kiln-dried stock, blanking of green material, or reduced cutting of wide dimension from small, logs. Staining of red alder may be prevented by kiln-drying directly from the sawing operation. Research into the staining reaction is warranted to determine if anti-stain solutions are feasible.
