A torque-to-tension converter was developed to measure screw-withdrawal strength of wood particleboard and plywood with a torque wrench as the measuring instrument. Consistent results were obtained up to a tension level of 800 lb., and the results from the torque-wrench test correlated well with the results from the standard test for screw withdrawal strength. This technique makes it unnecessary to cut test specimens from a full-size panel of plywood or particleboard. The measurements can be made directly at any position on the board, face or edge.
