This note gives the results of additional research on a new drying process combining radio frequency (RF) heating and kiln-drying. A more appropriate air flow reduced the total cost of drying a small sample of 2-inch white spruce in 15 hours from over $18.00 to less than $12.00 per 1000 fbm. Drying tests made with 2-inch yellow birch heartwood revealed that high internal temperatures caused by the radio frequency energy increased a tendency for collapse in this material. It was found that collapse could be greatly reduced by using a modified schedule employing lower dry and wet bulb temperatures.
