A series of hardwood and softwood samples containing varying levels of caustic catalyzed phenol formaldehyde resins were ashed at 550?C. for 4-8 hours, treated with sulfuric acid to help combust all the residual organic matter, reached, and dissolved in distilled water to a discrete volume. The sample was then analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer to determine the sodium content. The sodium hollow cathode lamp was used as the source, and a 5890 angstrom setting was used on the monochrometer. The sodium content of wood and resins used was determined by this method so that the percent of resin in the board could be calculated. With hardboard and softwood samples having resin contents ranging from 1.5 to 5 percent analyzed by this method, reasonably reliable results were obtained.
