Describes the collection of data on 3-ply lumber cores for the establishment of control charts. The value of such charts lies in their sensitive reaction to the presence of assignable causes of variation. As soon as a point goes out of control, prompt hunting for the cause can bring about its immediate discovery and correction. Thus, inferior materials entering into the process, careless machine settings, worn sanding rolls, or misaligned beds can be detected before the trouble becomes acute. The mere presence of the control chart keeps the machine operators more alert. Examples are given of the control of lumber core thickness at the planer and at the sander.
