Metal or plastic surfaces to be bonded to wood must be free of oil and grease. Metal must also be free of loose oxides. Chemical cleaning of metal surfaces is highly recommended, as is roughening of the surface, which is done with abrasives followed by chemical etching. Wood surfaces should be lightly sanded and the more rigid plastics should also be roughened by sanding prior to bonding. Bonding of wood and plastics to metal can be done with either cold or hot press adhesives. The former are cheaper, but do not result in as high quality bonds. Cold press adhesives include rubber adhesives and epoxy resins. Hot press adhesives include thermosetting resin-thermoplastic combination (Redux) and certain epoxy resins.
