Sanding Wood for Finishing

A well-sanded surface is a surface from which all machine marks and other irregularities have been removed and wood fibers cut down. Multiple drum sanders and belt polishers are described. For mouldings, a moulding belt is used. For complex shapes, spindle machines are used with flexible abrasive cloths fastened over a felt or rubber wheel shaped to fit the moulding. In addition to mechanical sanders, a certain amount of hand sanding is done in cabinet or assembly plants because of odd shapes with regions of inaccessibility.
