The U.S. Forest Products Laboratory

The Forest Products Laboratory of the Forest Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, was established in 1910 at Madison, Wisconsin to conduct research on properties and uses of forest products. A staff of 375 maintained by the Forest Service and by civilian and military expenditures is organized into eight technical and two service divisions. Technical divisions and their major concerns are: Timber Growth and Utilization Relations–wood quality, properties, and uses; Timber Mechanics–strength of wood and wood structures; Material Containers–packaging; Timber Physics– seasoning and moisture control; Wood Preservation–preservatives, coatings, veneer, and gluing; Forest Disease Research –decay, stain, and mold in wood; Derived Products–chemistry and composition of wood; and Pulp and Paper– paper making processes. Research results are issued by the Laboratory, the Forest Utilization Service, and through the Government Printing Office.
