Log Grading Improvements

Grades were developed for logs according to desirability of their products relative to current utilization practices. Hardwood logs can be graded for yield of factory lumber (Class I) and heavy timbers and ties (Class II); specifications are suggested for logs sawed for miscellaneous uses (Class III). A system for grading eastern softwood logs is less well developed, but interim grades for southern pine logs may also apply to northeastern softwoods. There is presently no uniform grading system for hardwood logs to be peeled for veneer. Log grades may be used more profitably when logs are being bucked than after.
