Manufacture of 1,000 board feet of 4/4 southern pine lumber also produced 4,990 lbs. of green wood residue and 1,400 lbs. of dry wood residue, or 45.4 percent, respectively, of the weight of debarked logs. Important uses for wood residue included charcoal, cement-sawdust tiles, hardboard, soil mulch, fuel, and pulpwood chips.
