Log production remained high during the several years preceding 1954. Power saws are now widely used and torque converters and portable steel spars are gaining acceptance. There is interest in the speed and easier maintenance of rubber tired tractors for skidding, but horses are still prime movers in Canada. Nearly all hauling is by truck and effort is being made to reconcile highway load restrictions. An overhead endless cable system (Lasso Cableway) is being tested in Canada for moving pulpwood. A similar overhead wire system seems applicable to harvesting pulpwood off steep slopes. Portable chippers may be a cheap way to dispose of slash in National Forests. A Logging and Milling Committee of FPRS was formed during 1953 and will direct investigations toward problems common to the logging industry. A bibliography of current literature on logging is included.
