Final evaluation of any material is by necessity a combination of the operators’ opinions and the results obtained with standardized equipment. Testing of finishing materials to be used on Singer cabinet-work is conducted by chemists and engineers familiar with the relationship existing between laboratory analysis and production application. This paper presents a summary of tests conducted at Singer’s South Bend plant, and includes tests of viscosity, refractive index, gloss value, settling, hardness, specific gravity, Hellige color, solids content, ash residue, cold check, print resistance, film formation, abrasion resistance, discoloration, water resistance, flow-out, cracking diameter, and sandiness.
