Exterior type and interior type glue joints between hardwood and plywood were tested using the dry, cold soak, and boil shear tests, and the 10 cycle interior test of U.S. Commercial Standard CS45-48. Results indicated that for testing exterior type bonds, the boil shear test is most dependable. Delamination test does not always reveal bond weaknesses. Quality of interior type bonds could be measured by dry shear when no moisture resistance is required and by 10 cycle test when some moisture resistance is required. Variability in hardboard properties is an important consideration in testing hardboard glue joints.
