Study was made of shrinkage properties of Eucalyptus rostrata and how these properties are modified by treating the wood with various concentrations of zinc chloride. A 5 percent solution reduced collapse and true shrinkage, and yielded a higher equilibrium moisture when air-dried. During the drying of heavy eucalyptus timbers and poles, the stresses developed are far higher than in the thinner members and collapse is accompanied by severe checking and, splitting. Salt-treated poles can be dried with a minimum of collapse and with little, if any, surface checking. That the outer layers of the pole are sound is of particular value for it is in this area that the maximum fiber stress is developed when critical loads, such as wind loads, are applied.
