The Effect of Drying Conditions on Strength of Coast-Type Douglas-Fir

A series of Douglas-fir specimens from the same material were air-dried, kiln-dried, and dried in organic vapors. Study was made of effects of various temperatures on drying rate, hygroscopicity, modulus of elasticity, compression per pendicular to grain, work to proportional limit, hardness, modulus of rupture, and work at maximum load. Drying at temperatures of 225 and 250?F. in organic vapors accelerated greatly the drying of Douglas-fir. The EMC of the wood, when conditioned at 70?F. and 65 percent RH, was reduced by drying temperatures of 190 to 250?F. Strength properties were affected by drying conditions; work to proportional limit and hardness were affected only at 250?F.; and MOR and work at maximum load were affected at 190, 225, and 250?F.
