An analysis of the benefits of whole-log debarking of redwood logs showed that the cost of debarking was more than recovered in the sawmilling operation in terms of greater production, greater recovery, higher lumber quality and saw-life, cleanup cost, safety, and utilization of mill leftovers. The advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of debarking are discussed. It was concluded that hand debarking at a prepared mill landing would be most economical for mills producing 200 Mbf or less per day, while hydraulic debarking would be more economical for larger sawmills.
