Kiln operators should be alert to the possibility that miscut lumber may be going into their kilns so that they will not be blamed for degrade that is the result of cutting rather than drying. Careful yard sorting should solve the problem of miscut lumber. Pieces which are extra thick, “wedges,” should be set aside and dried as thicker material so that they will not distort the other boards. Lumber which is thick at the middle and thin on the ends should be placed on thicker stickers on the ends of the kiln load. For lumber that has been sawed through and through, a kiln schedule that will create as much early set as possible will be helpful.
