Significant Factors for Establishing a Particle Board Or Hardboard Plant

Factors that must be studied in evaluating the economics of a particle board or hardboard plant are: raw material, types of products, marketability, and production equipment required. There area number of processes and manufacturing techniques available to the operator who is looking for ways convert his waste into saleable goods. Some are limited by the type of waste material they can utilize, as well as their market application. In the hardboard industry it is possible to detect two distinct approaches to the problem of manufacturing and marketing. The first is the “plywood approach,” which endeavors to produce one product of certain density, physical properties, surface characteristics, etc., and to market this product under a trade name. The other, which could be compared to that of a specialty paper mill, is to make panels of varying densities, physical properties, and surface characteristics, in order to give each customer the type of panel he requires for a range of markets. The two basic raw materials are: l) the fibers or particles, and 2) the various additives required to bind the fiber together and to impart to it various physical characteristics. The engineer can select the production method, the plant, and the equipment to manufacture the selected products economically. Moisture control, fiber control, feed controls, pH control, blending, felting, and pressing are all factors to be considered after a process is chosen.
