In planning for maximum efficiency in a furniture plant, it is first necessary to have an overall basic plan for the entire organization. Planning should be directed toward key departments through which all material must flow, then focal points should be established within individual departments. Requirements are listed which are essential for supervisors in properly scheduling work through their departments. The cross-cut saws are a key point in any efficient plan. If the proper volumes move through the cross-cut saws, the flow through subsequent machining operations will be more easily obtained. If planning is directed toward the cabinet room then every one in the entire plant is pointing in that direction and acting accordingly. The key areas in the cabinet rooms are the case clamps and in conveyorized finish systems the key areas are the conveyor loading points. The following requirements must be met: l) The supervisor must be able to adequately handle his department, 2) there must be a detailed schedule break down showing starting and completion dates familiar to all foremen and expediters, 3) a sequence of items must be established, 4) a time cycle must be established by the various major departments, 5) an overall method of daily check-up on individual departments as well as on plant-wide progress must be devised.
