Current developments and prospects for the immediate future in the Northeastern sawmilling area are discussed, with a projection regarding the place of the sawmill in the atomic age. Sawmills of the future will be wood-conversion plants, producing accurately-sized, properly-seasoned lumber, plus a steady flow of raw materials for pulp and chemical uses, Sawmills are becoming permanently located, consequently the Northeastern area is no longer a region of portable mills. One of the biggest reasons for this is the desire of the mill labor to live in town and lead normal family lives. Also, in his more accessible and stable location, the mill owner is apt to find that he now has more profitable opportunities to dispose of his mill waste. Advanced equipment now makes it possible for the Northeastern sawmill to produce more and better lumber with the same or even smaller crew. Far into the future, lumber will still be produced in a type of circular or band mill, with the log dogged to a carriage. There is a trend toward a greater number of specialized types of mills for special types of sawing, such as sash gang mills.
