U.S. Navy Experience with Carbides Applied to Woodworking Machines

The U.S. Navy established a training program in the use of carbide cutting tools in 1941. The first phase began by training selected people from each of the Navy’s 11 shipyards in industrial and scholastic atmospheres. Training films were produced from actual production situations using Navy shipyards and aircraft carriers. The third phase of the program involved advanced seminar techniques utilizing the films and highly skilled technical teams to demonstrate the operations. Convincing illustrations were given; such as an improvement in machining life on teak from 200 lineal feet with high speed steel to 150,000 lineal feet using cemented carbide tools. The general cutting angles of conventional high speed steel tools of 30 to 35 degree (positive) have been lowered to a 15 degree (as low as 3 degrees) positive angle for carbide tools. This leaves more stock on the back of the tool, which allows more support on the cutting edges. These training films are available for loan to organizations.
