The forest Products industries contribute to air contamination through several processes. To solve the problems created by disposing of wood wastes through burning, wastes might be used as fuel, but finding the facilities and the demand presents many difficulties. Incineration of wastes is an unsatisfactory solution, but the use of waste as land fill may be a desirable technique for disposal. Utilization of wastes always involves transportation of the material to another site, separation of its components, and most often complex and expensive procedures for turning the material into something useful. Reduction of waste through increased efficiency has great potential. Improved designs for factory blower systems could provide greater control of air contamination at low cost. Pollutants from finishing operations may be controlled by fume burners. The diesel and gasoline engines used in transporting forest products are also polluters.
