For 4 years the Norwegian Forest Research Institute has tested an “upon the ground” wood specimen test method. Stakes are placed flat so the entire under surface is in contact with the soil. Advantages are: sample less apt to dry out, saves labor, rot attacks stakes rapidly, allows for easier study and return to exposure plot, greater exposure area, and easier to collect rot samples. The stakes are of lumber 2 by 4 by 23 inches.
