Pressures of 3-10 psi generated by impeller pumps are used to convey chips. The impeller-blower is located behind the source of chips or shavings instead of at the outlet as with low pressure. This system has an advantage over conveyors in easier installation in existing mills. It has an advantage in lower cost for use in loading cars or other shipping units. It also results in greater compaction of chips with consequent freight savings. Design is an important part of a successful installation. Design factors are: l) rate of flow, 2) metered flow, 3) overload control, 4) velocity, and 5) type of pipe. The maximum economical distance for moving wood by this method is 5,000 – 6,000 feet.
