An accurate quick colorimetric test to determine how much creosote is left in old poles would greatly simplify maintenance problems for utility companies. A core of wood is removed; the outer 1/2-inch section is ground to fiber and placed in a tube of dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The solvent dissolves the creosote from the wood to form a brown solution which is matched with the color of standard solutions corresponding to given pounds of creosote per cubic foot retention. Though refinements are needed, this method shows promise.
