Particle Boards . . . Their Classification and Composition

The author offers a classification system for particle boards based on the numbers of distinct layers of which the board is composed and the type of wood element used. A brief description of the products and to some extent the processes is listed for each class of board. The major classes are: I. One-layer boards: 1) flat-pressed particles, 2) extruded particles, 3) flat-pressed mixtures of particles and disintegrated flakes, 4) extruded mixtures of particles and flakes, 5) flat-pressed intact flakes, 6) flat-pressed disintegrated flakes, and 7) extruded disintegrated flakes; II. Two-layer boards: 1) coarse particle base with fine particle surface, particle base with decorative flake overlay, and 4) disintegrated flake base with flake overlay; III. Three-layer boards: 1) fibrous particle center with fibrous particle surfaces, 2) coarse particle center with fine particle surfaces, disintegrated flake center with fine particle surfaces, coarse particle center with disintegrated flake surfaces, coarse particle center with intact thin flake surfaces, disintegrated thick flake center with intact thin flake surfaces, 7) disintegrated flakes–thick flake center with thin flake surfaces, and 8) intact flakes–thick flake center with thin flake surfaces. In concluding the author notes two strong trends in the industry. The first is a trend in the direction of flakes or other specially prepared elements, and away from the nondescript particle. The second is a trend toward multi-layer boards.
