The first production of granulated, wood-molded toilet seats appeared in 1945 and there are now 30 molders in the United States and two in Canada. About 45 million pounds (equivalent to 17 million board feet) of wood are used in the U.S. by the producers. Phenolic, melamine, and urea resin as well as some others are used. Specific gravity of the moulded product varies from 0.7 to 1.3 and the resin content from 5 to 50 percent. The cost of the molded product is less than one made from solid wood because of less waste and reduced labor cost. Certain physical properties such as density and hardness can be controlled which provides an advantage over solid wood.
